I guess "real soon" means "more than 6 months!"

Doh! Sorry 'bout that, been craaaaazy with RL stuff. Either that or I've been lazy and apparently no one else knows how to post news (glares at the other people who do know how to post news)! First order of business, you'll get more updates using this thing that I hear the kids are into nowadays called "Face Book" or something like that. http://www.facebook.com/reactionq3/ I don't actually use social media very much so I'll probably still use this as a platform for random updates. That being said, we've been making sideways progress. Sideways? Ayup! With the random free time of everyone involved, we've enlisted the help of SmileTheory to basically port the renderer improvements that Makro came up with into the renderer that SmileTheory's got sitting in the ioquake3 "features to include Soon(TM)" bin, more or less. This makes it easier not only for us to keep up-to-synch with the ioquake3 code when improvements are made there but also it's easier when random parts of the team disappear for a while due to RL needs. I think the renderer is just about there for the Reaction-specific features. Plus, SmileTheory of course has many other features that he came up with himself or ported from XReaL or ETXReaL or whatever it's called now. Hopefully we'll have a release this year. We're close. Golly but we're close! I'll try to catch up on some of the email and video links that popped my way though it's not as easy (or fun) to update the Vault with links. Was a tad easier 10 years ago when the site was more like a CMS instead of now when I have to do it all by hand (Vault, Guild, Backlot). This site's fine but the other three are kinda limpin' along. Thanks for keeping us in the back of your mind! We appreciate that our fans are still anticipating the next release! :D

Reaction alum behind the camera!

You may remember EvilFutsin, the man behind the 2.0 and 3.0 trailers and the Vengeance of the Wicked machinima, which you can see in two parts, here and here. He's been dabbling in real-world filmmaking and is embarking on a fully-funded project called Downcast. Please check out his Kickstarter page at http://kck.st/jGs3Kp and spread the word! It will help him get funding and get his first funded film off the ground! Check out the video, too, for clips of what the finished film will look like! You can also get more info at http://downcastthemovie.com/ Always nice to see what people are up to who have worked on Reaction in the past. We wish the best of luck to Futs!

Update! Not much going on!

We're not dead but things are going relatively slowly. There's progress that helps Reaction though not on our exact code. SmileTheory is rockin' the renderer paths in the oldschool way and there are a bunch of updates to the ioquake3 engine we base Reaction on. In fact, the Icelander is doing another round of synching to get our codebase to the current ioquake3 one. Good fixes but mostly stuff y'all don't care about, making the server more secure, fixing bugs, some optimizations for non-x86 platforms, stuff like that. We had a flurry of activity but in the last month things have been sloooow. Progress is being made but not enough that I have something new and shiny to show ya! Hopefully the next update will have a little more meat to it! Forums are deeeead slow. And very few new members--though that has more to do with the new CAPTCHA I put in to keep the spambots out. Before I did that, 15 to 20 registrations a day from spambots. UGH. Keep it real, homeslices! We're still here and still workin'!

Who says we don't celebrate holidays?

Thanks for being so understanding with the previous news post! But I mean, come on, to quit now? That makes as much sense as having 4 pistols! [EDIT] TTI: Or maybe 15-feet tall knives. We do appreciate our fans and thank them for their support. To that end, I've updated the Vault with a round of fan-made YouTube videos! Since that site isn't updated often, I'll copy and paste the links here as well: Clan K frag movie (YouTube) hmne is a fan of our music! (YouTube) tuperr Aqinat RQ3 movie by Kalmari (YouTube) Enemene jumpin' on oldschool maps (YouTube) Enemene takin' on two opponents (YouTube) Enemene and friends (YouTube) Geegee Destination: Frag A'Lot (YouTube) Geegee beatin' on some punks (YouTube) Geegee beatin' on more punks (YouTube) GraD87 bringin' the pain (YouTube)

Unfortunate news (April Fools' Day)

We have some unfortunate news. First, though, a little history lesson. Many many years ago when RQ3 was first being developed, there were internal test builds, "alpha" builds for team members not meant for outside distribution. We ran into a situation wherein one of our team members inadvertantly let one of the early pre-1.0 alphas leak. The build was buggy, incomplete, and showed some of the worst that RQ3 was at the time. It devastated the team and destroyed morale. It is my sad news to let you know that this has happened again. An internal build not meant for public distribution has gotten out into the wild. 10+ years ago, when there were many more team members working on the project, it was easier to absorb the loss of people who left due to the leak. Now, however, there are only a few of us left working on the project. It is my sad news to inform you, our loyal fans, that this is not something that we can recover from. The team is spread too thin, we've been toiling on the project in the 8 years since the last release, and we had really hoped to release something that wouldn't crash 75% of people's computers when they tried it. There's nothing quite as sucky as getting email asking when we'll fix the many bugs in the leaked version of the game we've been working on for so very long. That's not how we wanted to do a final release. We wanted to open the source and have a fun, pretty game that everyone could enjoy. Unfortunately, RQ3 3.2 will be the final official release. I guess the leak is our final unofficial release. We're closing up shop. Sorry again. :(
