5.2.0 - Weapon, Item, and Ammo Descriptions

The following shows all of the weapons and items in the game as well as a description of each.

Weapon descriptions written in 1998 by Mike "Snipe" Gazda at mgazda@home.com who, despite several months of searching, I cannot find or contact. The original weapon descriptions were made by him for Action Quake 2 and are being reproduced here. The item descriptions are original and not his creation. Special thanks goes out to Mike "Snipe" Gazda! We are treating his descriptions as "abandonware" or an "ophaned work" so hopefully he really does no longer care about what he wrote over 10 years ago being used in a project not for commercial gain.

SOG 37 Combat Knife

Ahhh your trusty combat knife. You are always equipped with at least one of these and collect another one for each person you kill. The SOG 37 represents the perfect utility knife. It can cut a rope or save your life. This knife is so good that it has become the official knife of the Navy SEALS. It is made of stainless steel so it won't rust or chip. It has a scratch resistant powder coating to prevent shininess and that makes it more stealthy. This weapon is perfect to use with silent slippers for that quiet ambush. When you kill someone with this knife there is almost no noise except the victim suffocating or choking on his own blood. This knife is weighted so it can be used as a throwing knife as well as a hand-held one. Due to its immense weight compared to bullets, it has a huge downward deviation when thrown. You have to compensate for this by aiming slightly higher than your target. The farther your target is the higher you have to aim. The best way to get good with this knife is to practice. Obviously the silencer and laser-sight do not apply here. When you hit someone with this weapon, it causes the same damage as a sniper rifle bullet; which is a lot. One hit to the chest or stomach and it's an instant early grave. When you choose Combat Knives as a weapon in teamplay you get 10 of these sharp-edged things and double that with a bandolier. Oh yeah, and one more thing; these babies will shred right through a kevlar vest so the only thing stopping you from that victory... is your aim.

Heckler & Koch MK23

The MK 23, by Heckler & Koch of Germany, is your default weapon. It is the prefered weapon of the US Special Operations COMmand where it has been designated the MK 23 MODEL 0 US SOCOM. This pistol appears in the Playstation hit: "Metal Gear Solid" as the SOCOM. While it may not be the most powerful weapon, it surely is the most reliable. A shot to the head will kill instantly 90% of the time. The other 10% account for very long-distance head shots which will render your opponent down to 4-5 health points. The MK23 is the military version of HK's Mark 23 Civilian pistol. This pistol is recognized for its sheer quality and durability. It can be set to Full Automatic for one-button-hold constant firing or set to Semi-Automatic for repeat-button pressing. Full automatic fires a little faster than Semi but accuracy drops severely. A proficient user can hit his enemy in the head 80% of the time on Semi-Automatic. This pistol holds a maximum of 2 extra clips each holding 12 rounds plus an already loaded clip. The MK23 can be fitted with laser-sight and a sound/light supressor. You can also use Akimbo Pistols. Even though Akimbo is defined as "Having hands on hips, and elbows pointing outwards", in this case it means having 2 pistols at once and firing the following order: Left Pistol, then Right, then Left, etc. Note: You must collect two clips before being able to reload Akimbo Pistols. Learn to use this pistol correctly as you will have to use it once the ammo of your primary weapon disappears. Or you could learn to jump-kick like a kangaroo.

Heckler & Koch Benelli Super 90 M3

The Benelli shotgun is a great gun to use in enclosed situations like small rooms and corridors. This gun is the second least accurate of the bunch (with the exception maybe, of the knife) and should not be used at a long distance. Because this gun uses shells which spread more and more as they travel a distance, this gun works best at about 5-10 yards. One shot will kill instantaneously at about 5 feet. This gun is issued to LAPD SWAT Rear Guards so that tells you that it is a highly prized gun. This gun has a maximum storing capacity of 7 shells. There are no toggleable functions; just load, fire, and kill. The M3 is similar to the M1 in all areas except that it has Semi-Automatic firing and a pump-action firing method. With the pump action it can handle gas grenades, flares, and tranquilizer darts. You won't find many people using the shotgun anymore as most prefer the fully-automated power of fully-automatic weapons such as the MP5 or M4. But in a closed area like a train or a building, the shotgun user just might come at the top of the frag list.

Shotgun

Handcannon

Well, what can be said about the Handcannon other than a huge BOOM! Because that's exactly what it sounds like when you fire from this mammoth of a power weapon. Although its dimensions are not very big (it's the 4th smallest weapon, including the grenade and knife; it's the 2nd smallest gun), its firing power is second to none. If you are anywhere within 10 feet, one shot from this dinosaur and your enemy gets thrown 100 miles. This one is the one to pick when in enclosed areas. Its reloading time is tediously long, however, and you have to do it manually. But once you have the handcannon mastered, expect a ton of fun throwing enemies out of windows and accross halls. This weapon takes 2 shells at a time, firing them both at the pull of the trigger. You can have a maximum of 14 shells and neither the Laser Sight nor sound/light supressor will work with it. But what's the point of laser sight?! Anything farther than 20 feet will scatter so widely that it will be a total blind shot. To see what I mean, go to the map urban with the Handcannon, then go to the top of the highest building and fire down at the road. You should see the pellets spreading out all over the pavement. Even though the shell is filled with buckshot which should shoot 8 pellets at a time, the Handcannon shoots about 20-30 pellets for better game balance. So if the map is enclosed, such as a building, train, or if there are many indoor areas, the Handcannon is the one to choose.

Colt Model 727 (M4)

The M4, made by Colt Inc. of America, is a shortened and lightened version of the M16A3. It features a collapsible stock and better sights. The M4 is the most powerful automatic weapon in the group. With a firing rate of about 850 rounds per minute, this baby delivers when asked. Although, with a capacity of 24 rounds and only one extra clip, you might find yourself out of ammo shorter than you'd have expected. This weapon is probably the second most popular weapon because of its brute strength. Be warned that it is harder to control than any of the other weapons because it has a huge muzzle drop when firing and you must compensate in order to get a shot to the body or head. The muzzle tends to lean up and you must apply extra down force to get it to fire where you want it. This weapon cannot be used with a silencer but it can, however, be utilized with a laser-sight. Using laser-sight with this gun makes it that much more accurate and that much more deadly. Although the MP5 has 20% more ammo, it's just not as powerful. And the M4 gives you compliments your kill with a huge bang and that 'Rambo' feeling. There's just quite nothing like it. Just watch out for snipers.

M4

Heckler & Koch MP5/10

The Heckler & Koch MP5 is arguably the most famous submachine gun ever produced. With its light weight and superior accuracy compared to other submachine guns, the MP5 makes for an excellent choice where a handheld pistol just isn't enough. The standard MP5 comes in a 9mm caliber but the MP5/10, used by most Law Enforcment officers, has a 10mm caliber. There is also an MP5/40 which utilizes a .40 S&W caliber round. The LAPD Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) team assigns the standard MP5 to all Assaulters, Scouts, and Element Leaders. The MP5 can be set to Semi-Automatic or Full-Automatic mode. Semi automatic requires the user to press the trigger for every round fired. In Full-Automatic the user presses and holds the trigger for sustained firing action. AQ2 uses only Full-Automatic with the option of selecting a 3-Round burst mode which fires 3 rounds for every trigger hold. Once the three rounds have been fired, the user must release and re-depress the trigger. Using the 3-Round burst mode makes the MP5 more accurate. The MP5 is the most-used weapon mainly because of its accuracy and 30 round capacity. It carries a maximum of two extra magazines plus one magazine loaded. The MP5 can be fitted with a laser-sight, greatly improving accuracy, and with a sound/light supressor, making yourself that much more stealthy.

MP5/10

SIG Sauer SSG 3000

This devil of a gun is the cause of many disputes in the AQ2 world. Why? Because it is a sniper rifle; and snipers are most likely campers. Note however, that in the AQ2 world snipers have the right to camp because it adds that much of a balance to the game. And if they are camping somewhere on a roof, sneak up on them and show them their brains on the far wall! This gun is a favorite among AQ2 users because it is just too fun. Imagine, there are two people left on your team. Your teammate is carrying an automatic weapon and you are backup sniper. You set up in a window and survey the situation. Suddenly your teammate runs out of ammo; he's ambushed by 2 enemies. What do you do? You bust a round in each of their heads and save the day. (Ok, so this probably wouldn't happen but situations similar have definitely occured to many.) The swiss made SIG SSG 3000 is a fine piece of sniping material. Even though it has a relatively long reload time, its rounds are Armor Piercing (AP) so they will do damage through a vest--but not kill from 100 health points. If you use this gun you'll definitly want either a vest to protect you from other snipers or a silencer so other snipers cannot trace your position. Laser-sight will not work with this weapon. No... you have something way better. A Hensoldt scope with 1.5-6x Zoom is your aiming helper. You can set this using the 'weapon' bind to adjust it to 1x (normal view), 2x, 4x, or 6x zoom. The weapon gets more accurate as you increase the zoom. Note that it is much harder to control the weapon's panning when at 4x or 6x zoom, because of the small FOV (Field of Vision) that you have. If you don't like the default zoomed SSG scope, there are other scopes available with the cg_rq3_ssgCrosshair cvar.

SSG

M26 Fragmentation Grenade

The grenade is the hands-down most strategic weapon in the lot. There's nothing like timing the throw of a grenade to have your enemy's limbs pierced by pieces of sharp shrapnel. The M26 Fragmentation Grenade is a lemon bodied explosive, perfect for clearing out small rooms. It can be pretty satisfying killing someone with a grenade. Using the 'weapon' bind you can manipulate the throwing distance. You can choose between 'short', 'medium', or 'long'. The distance also depends on how long you hold the fire button, after pulling the pin. A proficient user can get the grenade to land within inches of his desired landing spot. If you hear a pin being pulled, and a grenade being thrown, the best way to avoid it is to run at your opponent or the direction he is running. This is because he knows where the grenade landed and is running the opposite direction. You, however, cannot see the grenade because it is almost impossible to spot on the ground. If you do see it, it's probably too late. So you run where your enemy is running because the grenade can be in front of you, right beside you, or even behind you. Once thrown it takes about 2 seconds to blow.

Grenade

Kevlar Vest

The ideal eveningwear for the party you're about to crash! The Kevlar Vest will help keep your chest from being turned into swiss cheese. As handy as it is, it cannot stop a well-placed SSG AP round or a deftly-wielded combat knife...

Kevlar Vest

Laser Aiming Module

The good ol' laser sight from AQ2 has gotten a bit of an update. Sleek, high-tech, and full of pain. The LAM will help you to better group your shots and increase your accuracy. It only works on the MK23 Pistol, MP5/10, and the M4, but that's all it needs to work with...

Laser Sight

Silencer

Strike hard and fade into the night? Now you can deal death from above without giving away your position. The Silencer muffles your gunfire, removes any tracers that give away your position, and suppresses your muzzle flash. Not bad for a day's work! The silencer can be used with the MK23 Pistol, the MP5/10, and the SSG3000 Sniper Rifle.

Silencer

Slippers

For those times when you just don't want your opponents to hear where you are coming from, the Slippers are ideal. They help mask your footsteps and give you the element of surprise--something that can turn the tide in any battle.

Slippers

Bandolier

For those outings where you just know you'll need more ammo than usual, the Bandolier is just the item for you. It gives you an extra clip or double the ammunition of most weapons and in most cases comes with a fun toy--a grenade! As long as the server has not disabled grenades, the Bandolier in Teamplay carries on when you choose it as an item. Another neat toy is IR vision goggles for when you just don't want to squint in the darkness to find your foes. Again, the server can disable this ability if it is configured that way. Even without a grenade and IR vision, the Bandolier is worth its weight... in extra ammo.

Bandolier

M1 Helmet

For those of you more concerned about what's in your head than what's in your heart, the helmet is perfect. Giving added protection for headshots, it can stop those pesky snipers from ending your game with a single well placed bullet. However, the rest of your body is still unprotected, meaning that you can still die from a blast to the chest instead.

Helmet

Assorted Ammunition

While playing Deathmatch you will run into many objects lying on the ground. Most of these objects can be put to good use by sailing through the air at a high velocity before impacting on your opponents' skulls. Here is a sampling of some of the weapon ammunition that you will find while playing in the Deathmatch gameplay mode.
